Why St. Louis?
Some may ask, "Why St. Louis?" Well, St. Louis' Archbishop Justin Rigali has
close ties with the Vatican. For more than 25 years, Rigali worked at the Vatican serving
as the Pope's English translator as well as working on the Vatican diplomatic staff and
with the college of Cardinals. In conversations, the pope refers to Rigali as
"my friend." The Pope himself ordained Rigali a Bishop.
In addition to the Archbishop's ties with John Paul II, St. Louis is a predominately
Catholic city. With over 558,000 Catholics in the St. Louis Archdiocese and 110,000 in the
Belleville Diocese, the Pope would be visiting a highly concentrated Catholic area.
Also, the Pope usually has special meetings with area seminarians and religious men and
women and Catholic school children. St. Louis has the largest percentage of Catholic
students in Catholic parochial, archdiocesan and private schools of any U.S. diocese.
We're in good hands...Archbishop Rigali knows exactly what it takes to pull together a
Papal visit, from security arrangements to building helicopter pads. "I have
collaborated on so many of these trips- that gave me the courage to renew the invitation
to St. Louis," he said to reporters about his work in the Vatican.
