Children’s Daily Prayer 2013 - 2014
Children's Daily Prayer is the
perfect resource for catechists and Catholic school teachers looking for
an easy and meaningful order of prayer to use with students. Teachers
have the option of two different prayers. The first is a weekly prayer
written specifically about the Gospel Reading from the Sunday Mass. The
second is prayer for each day of the school week based on a selected
Lectionary Reading appropriate to the liturgical season and the needs of
children. In addition to choosing the prayer you will use, teachers now
have the option of using a long or short form of the psalms. The
standard format of prayer services combined with flexible components
make this the perfect resource for both teachers who have daily classes
and teachers who only have classes once a week.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word 2013 - 2014: A Weekly Resource
Maureen A. Kelly
Children's Liturgy of the Word provides liturgy preparation
pages and liturgy guides for every Sunday and holy day of obligation
from September 8, 2013 through August 31, 2014. Each liturgy guide
includes words of dismissal for the presider, an opening and closing
prayer, petitions for the Prayer of the Faithful, and the full text of
an interactive homily or reflection that connects the Word to the life
experiences of children.
This resource is
different from many of the other resources on the market. Rather than
focusing on catechizing or entertaining the children, Children's
Liturgy of the Word allows the power of the liturgy to act on
children, facilitating their growing relationship with God and allowing
them to testify to their own experiences of God's presence. Rather than
following a traditional classroom model of a lesson followed by an
activity or game as many other resources do, this resource closely
follows the structure of the Liturgy of the Word being celebrated in the
main assembly, as stipulated by the Directory for Masses with Children
and Introduction to the Lectionary for Masses with Children. This
resource makes leading a liturgically appropriate celebration of the
Word easy, even for inexperienced leaders.
Children's Liturgy of
the Word is written by Maureen A. Kelly, an internationally known
catechist and lecturer. She has an MA in Theology from the Catholic
University of Louvain in Belgium and has held parish, diocesan, and
national positions in child and adult catechesis and formation. She is
one of the founding members of the North American Forum on the
Catechumenate.

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families 2013-2014
Margaret M. Brennan
Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families 2013-2014 provides a
simple and approachable way for families to integrate what they hear at
Sunday Mass into their daily lives. This resource encourages family
attendance at Mass by providing parents with an explanation of the
Sunday Gospel, prompts for family conversation and reflection in the car
on the way to and from Mass, and suggestions for simple family
activities.
“For parents constantly on the go, this reflection on the Sunday Gospel
readings is a wonderful tool that can be used in the car, in the
kitchen, or in a favorite family gathering spot in your home to be the
kick-off for preparing the family for Sunday Mass. Celebrating
Sunday for Catholic Families gives a quick rundown on the Gospel
story, a brief reflection on its impact on life, and ways of thinking
about the story as a family as you go to and from church. Using this
tool is a great way to help the family share at a deeper level about the
Liturgy of the Word, naturally incorporating the Word into the family
conversation.”

My Best Teachers were
Saints: What Every Educator Can Learn from the Heroes of the Church
The lives of the saints are
inspiring to many people, but they can be especially inspiring for
teachers. For author and lifelong teacher Susan H. Swetnam, some of
the best, most inspiring, and most insightful mentors she has are
saints of the Catholic Church—and a remarkable number of these men
and women were teachers themselves! In My Best Teachers Were
Saints, Swetnam describes the lives of 52 saints that will be
especially inspiring to teachers. Some of the saints' lives offer
lessons on how to overcome the teaching profession's unique
problems; others show today's teachers how to identify successes
that are often difficult to discern. All of the saints in this book
will encourage teachers to persevere in the educational work that
God has called them to do. 304 Pages, Paperback

The Book of Saints & Heroes
The first Christians to visit Europe and the British Isles
met pagans who told tales of fairies, talking beasts, and other
wonderful things. To these marvelous stories, they soon added new
ones about the Christian saints. Some were true, others improbable,
and many simply fantastic. In the ones we include here, you’ll meet
the saint who spent seven Easters on a whale’s back and the amiable
lion who was St. Jerome’s friend. You’ll see St. George fight the
dragon, and you’ll read about the fierce wolf St. Francis of Assisi
converted. But many of these stories have
in them scarcely a wave of the fairy wand. So you’ll also find here
true tales of great saints such as St. Louis of France, St. Vincent
de Paul, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Elizabeth of Hungary — souls
marked by courage, kindness, and piety.
These marvelous legends and exciting
true stories of Christian saints and heroes will provide many hours
of delightful reading to believers and non-believers alike! 336

Ministry Ideas for
Celebrating Lent and Easter with Teens, Families, and Parishes
by Judy Dankert, Marilyn Kielbasa, Marie Sajsa
Like all of us, adolescents have a deep hunger for God. They have a need to
make sense out of life and a desire to make the world a better place. They
are people of endless hope, and have the capacity for deep sadness and
profound joy. Their hungers, needs, hopes, and moments of sadness and joy
mirror the experiences of biblical characters we meet during Lent and the
Easter season. To meet the challenge of making Lent and the Easter season
meaningful, parish and youth ministry efforts need to be intentional about
bringing alive the Scriptures for each Sunday and special commemoration of
the season.
Ministry Ideas for Celebrating Lent and Easter with Teens, Families, and
Parishes is a resource manual that provides activities for gathered
sessions with youth in parish settings, as well as ideas for meaningful ways
to observe the season with families and friends at home and in the
community. At the core of the manual are gathered sessions with youth that
are lectionary based, using themes from the Scriptures. Some sessions are
specific to a particular Sunday in one liturgical cycle. Others are more
thematically inclusive and may be used with all cycles. In addition to the
gathered sessions, supplementary activities for the season include a guided
meditation, a service project, and discussion activities that may be used in
a variety of ways throughout the season. Also included are two chapters
designed specifically for families. Each chapter contains several activities
that will help families share faith stories and create memories. These
activities can be sent home or adapted for use in a gathered environment.

Build Your Own
Bethlehem: A Nativity Scene and Activity Book for Christmastime
by Gertrud Mueller Nelson with Peter Mazar
Here are all the characters—and then some—for
building your own nativity scene! Each figure is yours to pop loose and
set up as the days of Christmas unfold. There’s the Holy Family of
Jesus, Mary and Joseph. There’s the stable with scampering mice and
cooing doves that sit in the rafters. There’s the ox and ass and a flock
of sheep accompanied by shepherds and their faithful dog. There’s an
angel, of course, and a star. Epiphany’s three holy kings, Caspar,
Melchior and Balthasar, are here too. And there are surprises—the
gospel’s “senior citizens,” Anna and Simeon, who wait 40 days to
meet their newborn Lord.
This beautiful, full-color activity
book (the pop-out figures are found inside) suggests eight occasions, from
Christmas until Candlemas—a full 40 days—for using the figures to tell
a portion of the nativity gospels, like a puppet theater! The art of
Gertrud Mueller Nelson and the sturdy pop-out figures truly bring the
Christmas stories to life.
Building your own Bethlehem is a
wonderful way to keep the spirit of Christmas alive well into the new
year—perfect for home or classroom, perfect for every age.
Celebrate these Advent and Christmas
stories at home or in the classroom:
• The annunciation to Mary
• The birth of Jesus
• The coming of the shepherds
• The flight into Egypt
• The visit of the Magi
• And more!

National Directory for
Catechesis
Faith is nurtured and practiced at the heart of the human and Catholic
families. Catechesis for life in Christ is led by many different people,
requiring a multiplicity of materials. The new National Directory for
Catechesis (NDC) is the resource that provides the inspiration for all
catechesis in the United States and the reference point for formation of
catechists and preparation of catechetical materials. A companion to the General
Directory for Catechesis, the NDC builds on its themes and
contextualizes catechesis within the life of the Church in the United
States, paying close attention to ongoing social and cultural challenges.
At its core is a desire to renew catechesis in dioceses, parishes, and
schools, to fire a new energy and commitment to proclaim the Gospel.
Comprehensive in scope, the NDC provides the fundamental theological and
pastoral principles and offers guidelines for applying those principles
within the catechetical mission of the Church in the United States. The
NDC is divided into ten chapters that delve into the catechesis and
diversity, evangelization, the faith of the Church, methodology, worship
and sacraments, moral formation, the settings for catechesis, those who
catechize, catechetical ministry, and resources. Throughout the NDC, it is
reinforced that Jesus is the heart of catechesis regardless of where
catechesis takes place. The NDC is a “must-have” for anyone in
catechesis or Catholic education—teachers, principals, directors and
coordinators of religious education and youth ministry, catechists, and
students in the field.

Pray
With Mary
A Child's Book of the Rosary
Nothing says "Catholic" like the rosary. That
familiar string of beads is a common identifier of our Catholic tradition of
honoring Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Because the rosary is such an integral
part of our Catholic heritage, every Catholic child deserves to know why we
pray it and how to pray it.
Activities engage the children in this hands-on tool for showing the
connections the rosary makes for us to Mary, God, the universal Church, and
the world. A total of 25 activities includes favorite formats like
dot-to-dot, coloring, decoding, rebuses, drawing, crossword puzzle, crafts,
and more.
Activities include:
|
• |
"Fill and Feel": Create a rosary with a pencil
on the illustration provided, then "feel the beads" by lightly
touching the backside of the page. |
|
• |
"A-maze-ing Faith": A three-way maze connects
our hearts to God and our actions to love. |
|
• |
"Creed Connections": Children learn the
prayers of the rosary and see the connections between those prayers,
the Trinity, and the core beliefs of our faith. |

Celebrate with Jesus
A Child's Book of the Sacraments
The newest book in this popular series
introduces each sacrament to young children with a story in the life of
Jesus. Key words for each sacrament help children understand and remember
the main emphasis of these celebrations of life and sources of grace within
the Church.
As always, engaging activities help children “heart-learn” as well as
“head-learn.” A symbol for each sacrament is used to provide an instant
visual reminder.
In addition to learning about the sacraments, children will also become
familiar with common sacramentals, such as palms, the rosary, and holy
water. The sacredness of daily activities is presented as well, to reassure
that the sacraments are not our only means of grace.

Activities Based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church
by Ellen Rossini
Sometimes when teaching children an aspect of our
Catholic Faith, it is helpful to have a special activity to
reinforce the lesson. They need exercises that train the mind or
move the heart. For this reason, Catholic teachers and parents
will appreciate these one hundred thoughtfully crafted
activities drawn from the new universal Catechism of the
Catholic Church.
The
worksheets, memory games, Bible studies, etc. in this book
require little preparation or materials and are designed to
supplement any catechetical text or program for children in
grades 1 through 8. Though simple to use, these exercises
uncover some of the depth and richness of Catholic doctrine and
practice. Topics of the activities are organized according to
the four pillars of the Catechism -- Faith, Sacraments,
Morality and Prayer. Each activity is self-contained, perforated
to tear out and reproduce for group use. Whether it is
memorizing the Creed, understanding the Bible, or learning to
pray, these exercises will enrich the faith of children and
those who teach them. Softcover,
