Marriage & Family Living Books

God's Little Devotional Book for Couples
There is perhaps no greater
joy than sharing "moments of the soul" with a spouse--reading a passage from
the Scriptures together or reading to each other words of inspiration that
can brighten a day, give encouragement and cause a smile or tug at the
heart. We encourage you to read these devotionals together as a couple.
Perhaps one a day. Perhaps several at a time. Take turns reading to each
other. Talk about what was said, if you desire, or let the words speak for
themselves. Take joy in your relationship. Marriage is a relationship of
highest value. Keep yours strong, alive and fresh. Above all, we encourage
you to spend some time in prayer together on a daily basis. It is in prayer
that hearts are truly knit together as one. 3210 pages. Hardcover

Sex and the Marriage
Covenant: A Basis for Morality
by John Kippley
The thesis of this book is that God intends that sexual intercourse should
be at least implicitly a renewal of the marriage covenant. From this it
follows that the marriage covenant provides the criterion to evaluate the
morality of every sexual act. Thus the title, Sex and the Marriage
Covenant, is an appropriate description of the book’s contents.
Marriage comes into being by a couple unreservedly entering God's covenant
of marriage; contraceptive intercourse contradicts the very essence of the
marriage covenant. From these considerations, Kippley developed the
covenant theology of sexuality described in this book. (Item

pathways into the Christian message. This book provides guidance for

Because We Love Them:
Fostering Christian Sexuality in Our Children
by Sheree Whitters Havlik
Yes, you can (and you must) talk with your kids about sex! The most
difficult subject for parents is our children?s understanding of
sexuality?we want to keep them pure and innocent for as long as we can.
It?s hard to know how to talk about sexuality with them when the time
comes. Especially from Christian point of view. We?re often unsure. When
is the right time? How should I begin? Drawing from years of experience as
both a parent and a counselor for teens, Sheree Havlik can help. She
reminds us that we must raise our children to share our Christian approach
to sexuality and all that this encompasses. With knowledge, passion, and a
friendly, conversational style, Havlik convinces us that we can be our
children?s primary source of information on sexuality. She helps us see
that every stage of our children?s development provides opportunity for
sharing our values: from general understandings of right and wrong when
they are young, to modesty and respect for others as they grow; from
having "the talk" as they mature, to follow-up conversations
with them as they reach adulthood and leave home. Her humor and
understanding help us relax and find our own answers to the questions of
when, and how. Once you?ve read this book, you?ll have a surer sense of
when and how to talk about sexuality with your kids. You already know why:
Because you love them. (Item #84147) $12.95 |

They
Do Grow Up: Parents and Teens Talk
by Patricia m. Robertson
Boundaries between parents and their teenaged children can often be well
defined and difficult to cross. They Do Grow Up helps bridge those
boundaries through two-way communication. The book is a collection of
meditations on common areas of concern for parents and teens. Each
observation is initiated by a mother who has teenage children, followed by
her teens responding with their own commentaries on the subject.
Appropriate Scripture passages are suggested for further reflection, as
well. Among the topics included are: driving; arrogance; worry;
chaperoning; clutter; and information overload. Anyone living in a
household with teens will enjoy and profit from the honesty shared in this
book. It can be a great discussion-starter for parents and teens at home
or anywhere. 96 pages; Paperback • 5-1/8 x 7-3/8. (Item #88318) $6.95 |

First Comes Love: Finding
Your Family in the Church and the Trinity
by Scott Hahn
Scott Hahn has the rare ability to explain the essential teachings of
Catholicism in a totally accessible manner. Rather than burdening the
reader with difficult or arcane references and arguments, he writes of
familiar feelings and situations and allows the theology to unfold
naturally. In First Comes Love, Hahn turns his attention to the
search for a sense of belonging, revealing the intimate connection between
the families men and women create on earth and the divine family, the Holy
Trinity.
Delving into the Gospels, Hahn shows that family terminology--words like brother,
sister, mother, father, and home--dominates
Jesus' speech and the writings of His first followers, and that these very
words illuminate Christianity's central ideas. As he explores the
fatherhood of God, the marriage of the Church to Christ, and the
all-enveloping role of the Holy Spirit, Hahn deepens readers'
understanding of the sacraments, teaches them how to create a family life
in the image of the Trinity, and demonstrates the ways in which the
analogy of the family applies to every aspect of Catholicism and its
practices--from the role of "father" embodied by the ancient
patriarchs and contemporary parish priests, to the comfort and guidance
offered by the brothers and sisters who comprise the Communion of Saints,
to the nurturing embrace of Mary, the mother of all Christians.
Through real-life examples (both humorous and compassionate) and
quotations drawn from the Scriptures, Hahn makes it clear that no matter
what sort of family readers come from--no matter what sort of
"dysfunction" they have experienced--they can find a family in
the Church. Reaching out to newcomers and to lifelong Christians alike, First
Comes Love is an invitation to discover a true home in the divine.

About the Revision
The USCCB undertook the revision of Catholic Household Blessings
and Prayers for several reasons. The liturgical calendar was
outdated. Booksellers had been requesting a more substantial
binding, suitable for gift-giving. We wanted to include some of the
newer prayers by Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI as well as
some prayers published by the USCCB. In addition, we added new
prayers for stewardship, vocations, retirement, and the like. An
entirely new thematic section of Scripture excerpts was added as
well. The revision includes a Scripture index and a first line index
to make it easier to use. As such, the revised text is substantially
longer than the current edition. It will be bound in bonded leather
with gold stamping, and colored end papers, and includes a
presentation page. The Scripture excerpts used are taken from the
Lectionary for Mass or the Liturgy of the Hours. Hardcover, 528
pages (Item #94840) $34.95
